To correct myself, the 5th of May is NOT Mexico's independence day. To be percise, it is Mexico's celebration of resistance against foreign dominance. A series of important battles built up this holiday. First, Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821. Afterwards, Mexico fought with America over Texas from 1846 to 1848. A civil war broke out in 1857. Benito Juarz, the president of Mexico then, helped with the severe war debts by placing a 2 year suspension on paying them back. However, France, England and Spain did not take kindly to this and planned to invade Mexico in 1862. However, Napolean sent 6000 French troops to overthrow the Mexican government. Realizing his true intentions England & Spain withdrew their support from the French troops. The heavily exhausted Mexican army still managed to fend off and defeat the French troops at the battle of Puebla. Ignacio Zaragoza, a renowned general led the Mexicans to victory. The city was named after him and is now called Puebla de Zaragoza.
