Post subject: Top 5 Favorite Books Or Stories Of All Time |
|
|
This thread is a chance for you to put your favorites out there. You can tell a lot about people by what they say to this question. I'm always curious to find out some new possible reading choices... Please give a one or two sentence description of each book if you like. Childhood favorites are encouraged as well. I'll start.
#5- (book) Something Wicked This Way Comes- Spooky and timeless classic- I could have picked any number of others by Ray Bradbury
#4- (collection)- The Complete Sherlock Holmes- Elementary, my dear Watson
#3- (book)- The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe- I could have picked any number of other ones for this slot, but I always liked this fantasy yarn. The movie (Chronicles Of Narnia) wasn't too bad either
#2- (book)- Lord Of The Flies- The classic story of boys trapped on an island, who delve into the shadows examining the darkness of the human condition
#1- (book)- Watership Down- The first "big" novel I ever read, and I COULD NOT put it down. Who have thunk a story about rabbits and a farmer could be so good? |

The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe is the first story i remember from my youth. My brother told it to me and a friend on our walk to school every day chapter by chapter. I was amazed by it then and still am.
In my adult life (while pregnant) i read the Flowers in the Attic Series which i LOVED.
then in my grandma years (HAHA) i like the James Patterson series with the detective. Kiss the girls and Along came a Spider being two that they made into movies. _________________ CYN

Nice thread Elvis. I'll go for:
1. George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four. I read this book as a teenager and it affected me greatly. War on Terror? Read this book!
2. Niccolo Machiaveli's The Prince. Simply great.
3. John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath. First book to make me cry, I think.
4. Lionel Shriver, We Need To Talk About Kevin. About a child that is evil. Or maybe a mother that fails. Shit-scary.
5. Douglas Adams, A Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Just the first one not the whole series). It absurd, funny, atheistic, cynical, but happy. |

Crabbs it surprises me 1984 made your list.
Elvis Lord of the Flies is my favorite book.
5. Samuel 1 and 2 (The Bible sorry crabbs)
4. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain)
3. C.S. Lewis- The Great Divorce
2. Grapes of Wrath- Steinbeck
1. Lord of the Flies... Best book in the world _________________ If you're in a war, instead of throwing a hand grenade at the enemy, throw one of those small pumpkins. Maybe it'll make everyone think how stupid war is, and while they are thinking, you can throw a real grenade at them. |

CYN-
Alex Cross is the MAN. Love that series.
If you like Patterson you may like this author too- there is an author named Nelson DeMille who does some pretty good stuff- suspenseful and his character John Corey is a sarcastic, funny dude.
From him I recommend The Charm School, Plum Island, By The Rivers Of Babylon, and Lion's Game- among others |

I used to read all the Virginia Andrews books, flowers in the attic series was good.
My top 5.
1) The whole of the shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella (actually all her books under that author name are funny as hell, and so darn true.
2) Remember Me by Christopher Pike. I loved this book as a teenager. Suited my love of horror films and dark stuff.
3) Wasted - Marya Hornbacher Brilliantly written autobiography. Reading the sequel at the moment.
4) Go Ask Alice by Anonymous .Another one from my teen years. As a result of reading this book I kept a diary for about 8 years.
No number 5 for me, I've read loads and loads of autobiographies and many of them are good. So I can't pick a number 5. |

If you are gonna play this game it helps to have had a childhood Judd.
Still, with your ban in place you have plenty of time for reading, eh? |

Very sadistic, Crabbs.
Your real name doesn't happen to be De Sade by any chance, does it?
And Judd, please feel free to compile your favorites list at any time... |

Are you implying I torture dumb animals? I prefer to think of it as taming wild beasts.
Anyhoo, there'd be no sadists if there were no masochists. Some people just can't get enough spanking! |

I had a top childhood mate.
Reading, well i'm back in work now following an operation, so tend to spend my time managing a big department and several projects. I'm also playing on the PS3 my lady got me for xmas in spare time.
Thanks for the concerns relating to my free time though.
