Post subject: Most common rookie mistakes Reply with quote

There are probably hundreds of mistakes rookie players make when they're just getting started out in the game but here is a list of some of the most commonly executed:

1.) Not understanding the value of crossing go diminishes and even goes to negative as the
game progresses

2.) Fail to understand properties must be upgraded to have greater value then mortgage

3.) Buy too many properties when can't afford

4.) Not factoring in 25% discounts for properties bought by a player who starts the bid

5.) Not factoring in #4 and paying full price for properties bought by a player who did not
start the bid

6.) Landing on a fortune and selecting yes if the fortune is to go to the other players extractor
and lose points by doing so (this move always makes me shake my head in disbelief)

7.) Upgrading all monopolies when have little cash esp. when the upgrades cause the player
to go into extreme negative (I can understand doing this if the player has significant properties
like greens or purples which only take 2 upgrades to have a major impact but upgrading all to
put the player in such negative cash they end up losing the next time they cross go is a shame)

So there you have it 7 very common mistakes made by rookie players which when they do any of these often causes them to lose

#6 above may not be entirely accurate. if the fortune is to move ahead on the board to an extractor or utility owned by the opponent which is also 1 space before the opponents fully upgraded property it may be adventagous to accept the fortune. under standard probabilities this may decreases the odds of landing on their fully upgraded property if it is one space before the utility/extractor the fortune give the option to move to. this is b/c rolling a 1 with a 2 dice roll is not possible.............. so under standard probability by going to an opponents extractor or utility also 1 space before the opponents fully upgraded property decreases the chance of landing on this property from 1 in 4 to 1 in 6 for 1 trip around go. this could make a maximum difference, depending on the property, of losing 500 in cash and opponent gaining 500 in cash.

Rookies, it's a mistake to sell your upgrades when you don't have to. Maybe to raise yourself out of negative debt so as to avoid an extra fee when passing start or perhaps to upgrade a better monoply instead, otherwise you lose half of what you paid. Don't do it.

lol ya it perplexes me when a rookie upgrades then downgrades when they have cash and keeps doing it over and over when it doesn't even appear they're doing it on purpose. or when they do this when it seems they're only downgradng properties b/c they want to upgrade their other monopoly when there's no strategic advantage of the move they've made
